An Integrative Approach to Acne

If you’ve ever dealt with skin issues, then you are surely familiar with the frustration and upset that typically follows. Our minds often become burdened with thoughts surrounding the state of our skin. Is it worse than yesterday? Should I cover it up or let it breathe? What do other people think when they see it? Not only that, but we are also left questioning why is this happening. Acne is not as simple as a bacterial issue. Acne can be caused by many different things, which is why it is important to take an integrative approach.

Finding The Root Cause

Acne is often thought to be an issue of unfavorable bacteria on the surface of the skin. This is why oral and topical antibiotics, like benzoyl peroxide, are commonly recommended. But, the problem with this is that bacteria is rarely the root cause of the problem.

Acne is multifactorial, meaning that there can be several different root causes at play varying from hormonal to digestive. Determining the root cause (or causes) is the most important step of healing the skin because it allows for us to take a targeted treatment approach.

Common Root Causes

  • Hormonal imbalance

  • Post birth control pill response

  • Blood sugar imbalance and insulin resistance

  • Digestive issues and gut microbiome imbalance

  • Poor elimination and detoxification

  • HPA axis dysfunction

  • Nervous system exhaustion

Some Extra Emotional Support

It is important to remember that acne is more than just a physical condition. In treating skin conditions it is important to address not only the physical body, but the emotional body as well. It is so easy to feel burdened down emotionally by acne. Remember that your body is doing its very best, and that breakouts are just our body’s way of communicating with us. Healing your skin is possible.
